„Mountaineering Villages“ are not only a label and a communication tool for villages, that have similar conditions and are interesting for mountaineering; they also are a community of like-minded municipalities, tourism organisations and providers, local stakeholders and guests, who plead for mindful acting. Many themes that are mentioned in connection to the trending topic of the climate crisis aren’t new to these people: travelling with public transport services or using a bus or taxi at site is not an unbreachable obstacle; using locally produced foods and crafts, or buying in regional and family run businesses goes without saying; cultural features are valued as something special. In Mountaineering Villages alpine culture and a sense of community are present and people work on models fit for the future.
This weekend, at the annual meeting in the Mountaineering Village Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden the participants will not only network and exchange experiences, they will also discuss the future of Mountaineering Villages. Where are their potentials, how do they create sustainable tourism, what challenges are they facing concerning changes in mountain sports? We will inform you about these discussions in our next newsletter and on our website.
Have a beautiful autum!

Located at
the foot of Raduha Mountain in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps is the small village of Luče,
which has joined the Mountaineering Villages on September 28th. Luče
wins its visitors over not only with spectacular mountaineering experiences,
like hiking Ojstrica or Raduha, but also with its local culture and landscapes.
A visit to the ice cave Snežna jama is
also recommended when visiting Luče.

Matsch is South Tyrol’s first Mountaineering Village. The local working group and local associations will show visitors, what this label means to the village. The festival won’t be big, but different and honest. It will be unique: soft tunes, good food from local farm products, culture and history, showing of local crafts, as well as friendly and relaxed locals in midst of a terrific mountainous landscape. It will be organised as a green event and as a part of the festivities of 150 Years Alpine Association of Southern Tyrol. The festival’s motto: look. listen. taste.
The Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention starts a new round of the “Reading Mountains festival” around the international Mountain Day on December 11th. Organise your own event - unleash your imagination and pass on the rich linguistic and literary diversity in the Alpine arc. A literary breakfast? A night in the library? Or a book presentation by sunrise on a mountain top? No limits are set with regard to the format of the event. If you plan an event, let us know to set it on our calendar of events.
In October 2018, thunderstorm Vaia destroyed great parts of the wood in Eastern Tyrol and Carinthia. After the cleanup in the Mountaineering Village Lesachtal it soon became obvious, that not only 400,000 m³ of wood was thrown over, but also the hiking trails were destroyed. In cooperation with the local group “Die Karnischen” (part of Section Austria), Section Austria, the Carinthian Alpine Association, Mountaineering Villages and the media, people were invited to help repair the hiking trails. 61 people followed this call in the beginning of summer and could mend most of the important trails. The municipiality coordinated the mission and provided board and lodging for the volunteers.
A big “Thank you” goes out to all volunteers!
In the Mountaineering Village Grünau im Almtal the “Bergsteigerdörfer hautnah” (Mountaineering Village up close) offered to experience “Waldness”, a package that combines Japanese Shirin Yoku (mindful experience of wood atmosphere) and European culture. The participants were invited to try out Wyda, a form of Celtic Meditation, to bathe in the aroma of alpine pines, and to yodel in front of the spectacular Almsee Lake. Fritz Wolf, educator in all themes concerning the wood, guided the group through his wood school and answered all questions of his eager pupils. Also on the program: a visit to Cumberland Wildlife Park and Grüne Erde Welt.
We thank the
tourism organisation of Traunsee-Almtal for organising this trip and our
Mountaineering Villages partners for the accommodation. more
On September 23rd, a gas explosion shook the Mountaineering Village St. Jodok, killed one and injured several more persons. The building, that also housed the local food store, was completely destroyed. To support the people concerned and the future of the store, we want to give you the donation information: http://www.vals.tirol.gv.at/Spendenkonto_Gasexplosion_St_Jodok_
