Gariwerd
Recently, representatives from the rock climbing community across Victoria - including the Alpenverein Melbourne - attended an independently chaired round-table convened by Parks Victoria‘s Chair Jeff Floyd to discuss concerns and issues relating to recent changes to approved rock climbing areas in Gariwerd / the Grampians.
Throughout the roundtable, there was a strong positive spirit to work together on how to best manage rock climbing in the future in Gariwerd / the Grampians particularly in the context of Traditional Owners wishes and the new Landscape Management Plan for Gariwerd / the Grampians area.
To ensure the conversation continues, a second roundtable will be scheduled to discuss a number of key areas including Parks Victoria’s process to complete environmental and cultural heritage assessments; and the climbing community’s proposal for a climbing management plan.
We understand that this isn't much information on what was discussed however in order to foster an open and honest discussion, the attending parties agreed to respect the confidences of the conversation - except the above agreed messages - which the Alpenverein will honour.
If you want to provide input into the upcoming management plan review, you can register on the Engage Victoria Website for one of the upcoming community workshops or as an Alpenverein Member get in touch and share your input which we will voice at the next roundtable meeting.
