Dear All,

I have spent my rest day in front of the computer reliving Sundays adventure in a better light.  It really was an enlightening day and so wonderful to have so many of you there with me (through Andy).  It was definitely the challenge I was looking for.  The past 6 months have also been a challenge that I have enjoyed.  But would I do it again ...???  Yes I would do it again but not for a while!!! My preferred competitive distance would most certainly be the half Ironman (1.9k swim, 90k bike and 21.1k run).

But I did want to say a huge thank you to you all.  So many of my friends and family have had a tough or life changing year so far and you inspired me to keep going through the darkest moments of the day.  I did it for you, all of you... for those of you that have faced life threatening challenges, supported loved ones through life threatening challenges, become loving parents, changed jobs, made life changing decisions, got married, celebrated years of commitment to one another, faced exams, the list goes on...  You are all so strong and brave and I love and respect you all so much.  Thank you for being part of my life's journey!

I hope you enjoy my video that I have created of the day (see dropbox link).  None of this would have been possible without Andy.  He is my rock, my coach, my best friend, my advisor, my partner, my lover... He is mine and I am his, thank you Andy.

 The Swim

This was stressful! I know I can swim well but there were so many other factors to influence my time. To begin with all the ladies started together, about 400 of us!! I did manage to get a good starting spot at the front but I don't know if that helped. I had a lot of people on my toes and then we caught up with the other men's waves. Overtaking was challenging as now we were nearly at the back of a field with over 3000 people. However, the biggest fault (of my own making) was swimming in the wrong direction on the return swim. The sun was rising and you really couldn't see anything. So it was VERY difficult to site the buoys, headland and even the boats by the entrance of the canal. I think I used at least 6 mins swimming 200m in the wrong direction and then the 200m back again! Then in the canal I really had to remember some of my waterpolo defence skills in the struggle to get past other swimmers. I think in retrospect I should have registered for the fast wave of people that could swim the distance in under an hour. But a good start to a great day!

The Bike

This was really a great ride. There were so many competitors and spectators so over the whole 180km you were hardly ever alone. The first lap was really good. The plan was to keep between 140-150 watts on the power and 140 HR. However I was quite conscious that my heart rate was increasing on the first lap. So I took it a bit easier on the second lap as I knew I still had a marathon to run. Overall I was quite pleased with my bike time. The split time for the first lap was about 30km/h but the second was 27km/h

The Run

This really was the longest and hardest I have ever run for. As expected the first 20km went really well, low heart rate and relaxed tempo with a smile on my face at all times. Then the pain really started to kick in and I had to walk/run a fair bit on the start of the second lap. Going through the centre point where all the spectators are was truly amazing and they all lifted my spirits at the start of the second half of the second lap. From 35km I just started getting faster and faster again. It really was a mind game the pain just went and the legs wanted to run. The feeling of crossing that finish line was unbelievable. I wish I could doit again to really take it in as I think I cried for the last 200m so couldn't see that much. It really was all worth it!!!!
